I don't think nostalgia truly exists.
I think we simply needed a gentler word. Something softer than grief. Something prettier than haunting.
How else do you explain a grown man stopping in the middle of a busy day because a certain song sounded like a summer that no longer exists?
How else do you explain missing a house that still stands, a person who is very much alive, or a version of yourself that never made it this far?
I don't think memories fade. I think they learn silence.
They sit quietly in the back of the mind, waiting for rain, a familiar scent, or a careless afternoon to remind them they were once loved.
Perhaps that's why we call it nostalgia.
Because saying, "I miss who I used to be," hurts too much.
Because saying, "I'm haunted by happier days," sounds absurd.
So we give it a beautiful name and pretend we're only remembering...
when, in truth, we are mourning.
