“They recognize the favor of Allah and then deny it, and most of them are disbelievers”
(Surah “an-Nahl” ayah 83)
• Ibn Abbas radi Allahu ‘anh (as reported by at-Tabari through Ikrimah, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid and others) said that the interpretation of this verse also includes the situation when a person, upon achieving success says:
- -“We earned this ourselves”;
- -“This is from my own effort/I worked hard for this”;
- -“This is because of my knowledge” (as Qarun said);
- -“This is due to the merit of my ancestors” (attributing the blessing to his lineage or the intercession of his forefathers/idols).
Thus, a person inwardly understands that it is a favor from Allah, but in his words and actions he denies it by attributing the success to himself, his efforts, his knowledge, or his ancestors.
