Research Paper: Re-evaluating the Age of Lady Aisha (May Allah Be Pleased with Her) at the Time of Her Marriage

Objective

It is reported in the agreed-upon narration found in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) married Lady Aisha when she was six years old, consummated the marriage when she was nine years old, and that she remained with him for nine years

It should be noted that Sahih al-Bukhari is regarded by the majority of Sunni scholars as the most authentic book after the Qur'an, followed by Sahih Muslim Who was a student of Al-Bukhari

It is also noteworthy that the narrations concerning Aisha's age in Sahih al-Bukhari are transmitted through Hisham ibn Urwah

This paper does not seek to challenge established Islamic beliefs or question the authenticity of the canonical collections of Hadith. Rather, it aims to re-examine the understanding of a specific narration in light of the historical context and evidence found in the earliest Islamic sources

The study presents a view adopted by a number of contemporary scholars, including Dr. Tariq Al-Suwaidan and Dr. Ahmed Karima, who argue that Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was, most likely, approximately nineteen years old when she entered the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), rather than nine years old

First: The Historical and Logical Context

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was renowned for her prominent role in the spread of Islam, her participation in major historical events, and her exceptional knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith narration

Historical sources also indicate that she had previously been engaged to Jubayr ibn Mut'im before her marriage to the Prophet. These social circumstances, together with her prior engagement, suggest that she was closer to adulthood and maturity than to the age of nine

Second: Chronological Evidence Through Comparison with Asma bint Abu Bakr (May Allah Be Pleased with Her)

One of the strongest historical arguments supporting this view is the age difference between Lady Aisha and her elder sister, Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her)

Historical Consensus

Historical sources consistently report that Asma was ten years older than Aisha.

Chronological Calculation

  • -Asma died in 73 AH at the age of 100.
  • -Subtracting the year of her death from her age (100 − 73 = 27) indicates that she was 27 years old at the time of the Hijrah (Migration).
  • -The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated his marriage with Aisha in the second year after the Hijrah, meaning that Asma would have been 29 years old at that time.
  • -Subtracting the reported ten-year age difference between the two sisters (29 − 10) results in 19 years

Conclusion

Based on this chronological sequence, Lady Aisha's age at the time she entered the Prophet's household is estimated to have been approximately 19 years

Third: Examining the Narrator of the Hadith: Hisham ibn Urwah

Although the narration stating, "He married her when she was six and consummated the marriage when she was nine," is recorded in the authentic Hadith collections, scholars of 'Ilm al-Rijal (the science of narrator evaluation) discussed certain circumstances concerning its principal narrator, Hisham ibn Urwah

Memory in Later Life

Biographical and narrator-critical works mention that after Hisham moved from Madinah to Iraq and advanced in age, his memory was no longer as strong as it had been during his youth

The Opinions of Hadith Scholars

Some classical sources, including Mizan al-I'tidal and Al-Kamil fi Du'afa' al-Rijal, indicate that some of Hisham's later narrations may have been affected by the natural effects of old age, potentially resulting in discrepancies concerning certain numerical details or dates while leaving the essence of the narration intact

Ultimately, perfect knowledge belongs to Allah alone, and He knows the truth best

It appears that many women in this region express adherence to Islamic principles, yet simultaneously desire a sense of freedom. I am curious to understand the specific nature of the freedom they are seeking.
